Born on the bingzi day of the 12th lunar month, 1188, my father, Shi Zhiqi, was majestic in bearing and possessed an open, chivalrous and generous heart. He had shown exceptional intellect ever since he was very young. Diligently studying all philosophical schools, he plumbed profound learning and wisdom. Though he thrice entered the National Academy and twice sat for imperial examinations, success eluded him. Resigned to fate, he dwelled in his hometown and steeped himself in art and literature--a true heir to the literati spirit of the Wei-Jin period. His iron-stroke calligraphy was coveted by many and poets hailed him as "Master of Azure Seclusion." In his later years, he immersed himself in Taoism, with righteous and appropriate behavior and a mind beyond earthly cares. He died at home on the bingwu day, 2nd month, 1262, aged 75.

I, Shi Jingnan, with deepest sorrow, buried my father in the same grave of his late wife at the southern plain of Ruizhu Mountain, Shanyin, on the renyin day, 12th month, 1264, as decreed in his will. With pressing time that made it impossible for an epitaph to be composed by a celebrated master of the time, I wrote this that will go into my father’s tomb.

Inscription composed by his son Jing Nan in tears of blood. Calligraphy by Zhao Yujian, Gentleman for Audience, newly appointed Assistant Minister of the Court of Imperial Treasury. Engraved by Huang Ren.

Note: Stele 80×53 cm. Stone type unknown.
