Epitaph of Madam Chen Jingjue, Wife of Shi Zhiqi
Chen Jingjue of Ninghai County, Taizhou Prefecture, was from the Chen family renowned in the prefecture southeast part. Her father Chen Zi gained local fame for his mastery of the Theory of Changes. I (Shi Zhiqi), being at odds with worldly conventions, came into kinship with her family when my father served in the south. All the Chen generations have inhabited here for a century, possessing thousands of books.

Before reaching adulthood, Madam Chen lost her father. Her uncle Chen Kunxue (courtesy name Gaoyi), a man of ancient ideals, raised her as his own daughter. I had over twenty years of association with her family. I built the Bogu Academy by the East Stream and cultivated scholarly fields near the West Ravine. I traveled to seek mentors, and reclined with the zither and books at leisure. Though the number of our household members exceeded a hundred and our income was meager, she ensured abundance. She shielded me from disturbances of trivial and weighty matters. My scholarly pursuits with Confucian masters and ancient texts were all sustained by her support.

Serene and perceptive, dignified in propriety, versed in classics and histories, Madam Chen served her mother devotedly as a maiden. After marriage, she attended her parents-in-law diligently, observing their needs without slack. When a family member was ill, she personally prepared all medicines; to distant kin, she extended utmost kindness; to those in need, she gave generously; she even gave up her jewelry without hesitation. Having recited Buddhist sutras at every dawn since childhood, she aspired to transcend worldly dust, utterly devoid of vulgar affectations.

After thirty-six years as my wife, she passed away ere I could repay her devotion. Kinsfolk and neighbors wept in shared sorrow. Alas!
