Worldly affairs involve both innovation and inheritance – sometimes innovation stems from inheritance, and inheritance manifests as innovation. The Mountain God Temple at Hanshui Ravine [Nuangushan], though founded in unrecorded times, began as mere wilderness. Its construction enshrining deities manifested founders' devotion. Later, Chen Jianjing renovated it – an inheritor's labor. Yet without successors decades later, it might have crumbled into ruins. Now Chen Shengao (grandson) and village elders, inspired by predecessors, funded new construction: a three-bay hall beside the temple with thick walls, elevated shrine, painted beams – completed in three years. The old temple became side chambers; a new pavilion aids travelers. Is this innovation? It inherits tradition. Inheritance? It innovates. Alas! Those governing nations or families err by: not innovating for posterity; not inheriting ancestral diligence; or hypocritically "preserving tradition" while disregarding wisdom. Witnessing this, how can one not awaken and strive? Herein recorded.
