余邑半隐先生俞公,以癸丑(1553 年)卒于家,其长子太学生时炤以书併少卿沃洲吕公所为状,

来京师请铭于予。予时病,弗果。比今秋,钦承上命,往典南畿文事。事竣,继以书请。予

与世为姻戚,义不容辞。按公讳棉,字汝延。家世缵缨,远有端绪,为邑名族。其隐而潜德

者,代有闻人。曾大父讳叔晦,赠刑部主事。大父讳铎,为云南左方伯。考讳深,仕工部左

侍郎。嫡母潘,予之大姑也。母奚氏,望族。公幼习举子业。性倜傥,尚气节。事少司空,

先生克尽孝道,与兄弟尤相友爱。处宗族乡党,悉有恩亩推厥所有以赒贫乏,不吝其资,不

怵于威,不诱于利,义之所在,即行之费疑。至其与人也,则煦然如春阳之被,而方物无不

得其和者,且识赏精绩,论人物、评世事,卓然有见。族有诬公以非其罪者,公曰:“吾此

□可对于天,求无愧而已矣,彼焉能说我哉。”新尹曹蒞政,卒白其诬,致之于法。又有以

赎其事,委曲诱公,公执意不回,所图亦弗遂焉。是盖公性之畀于天者,得其全义,方之受

于家庭者,异于人欤。其所履之正,所守之恪,有如此。以输粟公廪,获冠带之荣,□自号

曰“半隐云”。其卒于嘉靖癸丑(1553 年)三月十三日,距生弘治丁巳 (1497 年)□月十八日,

享年五十有七。 卜乙卯岁(1555 年)之十二月十二日,葬于邑东二十二都上畈。配吕氏,沃

洲公之从姐也。贞淑勤约,阑仪可式。子男三:长即国子生时炤;次时燧,为卫掾;幼时爕,

继公弟 嗣。女一,适本邑庠生何绹。孙男九人: 斗东、 斗辰、 斗运、 斗印、 斗度、 斗

正、 斗华、 斗方、 斗经。孙女五人,俱在室。

 

铭曰:

吁嗟先生,履贞蹈恪,气大而充,行刚而确,处世之亨,以道自乐,遇变之撄,以理自度,

司空遗风,庶几无怍,拔茅之原,于焉永托。

Yu Mian (1497-1553), courtesy name Ruyan, alias Half-Recluse. Descended from illustrious lineage, a prominent clan. Great-grandfather Yu Shuhui posthumously awarded Secretary in the Ministry of Justice. Grandfather Yu Duo served as Yunnan Left Administration Commissioner. Father Yu Shen rose to Left Vice Minister of Works. Legal mother Lady Pan (author's aunt), birth mother Lady Xi from eminent family. Trained in imperial examinations since youth, charismatic with strong principles. Served father with utmost filiality, deeply affectionate with brothers. Relieved poverty unstintingly, acted righteously undeterred by threats or bribes. Treated others with springlike warmth, discerning in judging people and affairs. When clansmen falsely accused him, declared: "My [text lost] is heaven-witnessed and blameless." New Magistrate Cao later exonerated him, punishing the slanderer. Others attempted bribery to drop charges, but he resolutely refused. Having earned honorary rank by donating grain, thus styled "Half-Recluse". Died on March 13, Jiajing Guichou Year (1553), born on [erased] 18th, Hongzhi Dingsi Year (1497), aged 57. Buried at Shangfan, 22nd District east of county on December 12, Yimao Year (1555). Wife Lady Lü (cousin of Wozhou Lord), chaste and diligent exemplar. Sons: eldest Shizhao (Imperial College student); second Shimian (military secretariat clerk); youngest Shixie (adopted by uncle). Daughter married county student He Tao. Grandsons: Doudong, Douchen, Douyun, Douyin, Doudou, Douzheng, Douhua, Doufang, Doujing. Five unmarried granddaughters.

 

Epitaph: Alas, the master kept virtue chaste / Spirit grand and strong / Resolute in deed / Thriving by Dao's delight / Met trials with reason's sight / Inheriting the Vice Minister's blameless grace / Now rests in Bamao fields, his eternal place.
